It’s not the first thing that comes to mind when when you think of reducing single-use items; paper-based items like paper towels, cotton rounds and coffee filters seem insignificant compared with plastic wrap, bags, zip-top baggies, etc but if you consider the number you use and the amount of resources that go into making, packaging and shipping them to you for you to use it for seconds and throw it away are a bit off balance.
These reusable two-ply cotton flannel wipes are a soft and absorbent alternative that you can just rinse out and reuse then wash with your towels (in a mesh delicates bag if you’d prefer) and if they get a bit stained you can soak them with your other reusable items in an oxygen based cleanser before your wash load.
Each pack comes with five two-ply flannel wipes; please specify if you want the fully natural cotton, or one of the patterned flannels shown in the photos on one side.
Note: do not use fabric softener on these as they will lose their absorbency. They should come out nice and fluffy without softener but if you feel it necessary try adding a half cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle to neutralize the alkaline residue left by your laundry soap, which is where the stiffness comes from. Alternately, switch to a neutral detergent based laundry cleaner to avoid the need altogether. Personally I use granulated Savon de Marseille in my wash cycle with an extra scoop of oxygen cleaner after soaking overnight and all of my reusable items come out fresh, soft and clean without harsh chemical scents and additives.
