When you're cooking it's really convenient to have salt readily accessible but grease splatter and steam make it difficult to keep an open bowl of salt right next to the stove. Shakers are an option but the holes are either too small to be convenient or so big that steam gets in while you're pouring and the holes get clogged. For a while I had something called a salt pig that did a decent job of keeping the crud out because the opening doesn't point directly up but I still had to scrape crusted salt off the bottom periodically because it's still open to the air and steam and humidity get in.

All items intended for direct contact with food are finished with a mineral oil and beeswax finish; because this natural finish will dry out over time it is advisable to reapply a similar finish periodically to keep your item looking fantastic.
